How to Layer Necklaces: A Simple Guide to the Perfect Stack

If you've ever put on three necklaces and ended up with one big knot by lunch, this guide is for you. Layering looks effortless, but there's a simple formula behind every stack that works. Here's the one I use every day.

1. Start with three different lengths

The number one rule of layering: every necklace needs its own space. If two chains are the same length, they'll sit on top of each other and tangle. Leave about 2 inches between each layer.

  • Short (14 to 16 inches): sits at the base of your neck. Chokers and dainty pendants live here.
  • Medium (18 to 20 inches): falls just below the collarbone. This is the spot for your main pendant.
  • Long (22 to 26 inches): drops toward the chest and pulls the whole look together.

That's exactly how our Build A Stack page is set up: pick one short, one medium, and one long, and you're done.

2. Pick one focal piece

A great stack has one piece that gets the attention. Usually that's your medium layer, and for a lot of us it's a chai or a Star of David. Everything else should support it, not compete with it. If your focal piece is bold and sparkly, like the Full Pave Chai, keep the other two layers simpler.

3. Mix textures, not just lengths

A stack of three identical chains looks flat. Try pairing a beaded necklace with a plain chain and a pendant. Beads add color and texture, a smooth chain keeps it clean, and the pendant gives it meaning. Our beaded collection is made for exactly this.

4. Keep your metals consistent (or mix on purpose)

All gold or all silver always looks polished. If you want to mix, do it with intention: two gold layers and one silver accent reads as a choice. A perfect half and half split can look accidental.

5. Three stacks to copy

The everyday stack
TLV City Chai (16 inches) + The Yakov Chai (18 inches) + Market Chai (22 inches). Three chais, three lengths, all gold. Simple and meaningful.

The Star of David stack
Emunah Necklace (14 inches with extension) + The Avraham Necklace (18 inches) + Market Star (20 inches). The blue beads on the Market Star add just the right pop of color.

The statement stack
Studded Chai Choker + Rainbow Fish Necklace (18 inches) + Shuk Chai (26 inches). Bold, colorful, and made to be noticed.

6. How to keep them from tangling

  • Make sure there's real space between lengths. This fixes most tangling on its own.
  • Use extensions. Most of our pieces come with a 2 inch extension, so you can fine tune each layer.
  • Put on the longest necklace first and the shortest last.
  • Mix weights: a slightly heavier pendant on the bottom layer helps it hang straight.

7. Make it yours

The best stacks tell a story. Maybe it's a chai for life, a hamsa for protection, and a fish for good luck. If you want to build something completely custom, try our Build Your Own Necklace page: choose a chain, then add the charms that mean something to you. Here's how to style a charm necklace.
